The topics presented in this forum address reading disabilities, reading difficulties, and school-based interventions that work. In schooling, the most critical predictor of whether someone will stay in school, and certainly how well they are going to do in school, is reading. It is the essential ingredient upon which all other learning depends. While poor and minority students account for a disproportionate share of struggling readers, NAEP data tells us that about one-third of poorly-performing fourth-grade readers are children of college-educated parents. Teachers need to, at the earliest grade possible, identify students who are going to need help in the area of reading and then determine the most effective prevention and intervention strategies.
