Marine & Aquatic Science Literacy: Educating the 21st-Century Workforce

Sea Grant?s vision for U.S. education is ambitious, focused, and proactive. The purpose of this document is to provide an increased public knowledge and understanding of the scientific processes and issues related to marine and aquatic areas. As a national network, Sea Grant has the inherent strengths necessary to be a key player in the development of this critical national education base. The following recommendations and initiatives presented by Sea Grant are discussed in this document: (1) Professional Development for Educators; (2) Formal and Informal Education Efforts; (3) Research and Education Opportunities for Undergraduate and Graduate Students; (4) Curriculum Development; (5) Inclusion of Traditionally Underrepresented/Underserved Groups; (6) Technology-Based Science Education; (7) Assessment and Evaluation; and (8) Fostering Collaborations and Partnerships.
