Virginia State Department of Education
The Code of Virginia requires school divisions statewide to submit data annually to the Department of Education (DOE) on incidents of discipline, crime, and violence. These incidents shall include: (1) those that occurred on school property, on a school bus, or at a school-sponsored activity; and (2) offenses, wherever committed, by students enrolled in a school, if the offense would be a felony if committed by an adult or would be a violation of the Drug Control Act. In addition, the federal Gun-Free Schools Act of 1994 (GFSA, Sec. 14061) requires all states that receive federal funds under the Safe and Drug-Free Schools and Communities Act to report annually the number of students suspended or expelled statewide for the possession of firearms on school property. This document contains regional data for the state of Virginia on discipline, crime, and violence. (Contains 3 appendices, 12 tables, & 13 charts.)
