Doctorates in Mathematics Education--An Acute Shortage.

This essay reports on the shortage of doctorates in mathematics education. The history of the production of doctorates in mathematics education is discussed as are the factors influencing supply and demand. Statistics are presented that indicate that almost 80% of faculty in mathematics education will be eligible for retirement in the years 2000- 2010. (MM)
