The First Year: Students' Performance on 10th Grade Standards and Subsequent Performance in the First Year of College (2001-02).

This study explored the relationship between Oregon high school students' performance in a standards-based system and their subsequent performance in the first year of college. Findings from 6,082 students from the Oregon University System and 12,519 from Oregon community colleges led to the conclusion that the 10th grade benchmark performance may be described as an early indicator of academic preparation. The recommendation is that high school teachers, counselors, parents, and students use the data on students' grade 10 benchmark performance as a planning tool for the last 2 years of high school. Further study is needed to determine the degree to which students' 10th grade benchmark performance is a predictor of first-year college success.
