A Closer Look at Public Higher Education in South Carolina: Institutional Effectiveness, Accountability, and Performance.

This publication examines data reported annually by South Carolina's public institutions of higher education as part of institutional effectiveness reporting. Data are displayed on the 33 public institutions of higher education within groupings of institutions. The 11 sections highlight various aspects of higher education: (1) "Mission Focus" (review of programs curricula offered at institutions, and institutional mission statements); (2) "Quality of Faculty" (academic and other credentials and faculty compensation by sector); (3) "Classroom Quality" (e.g., courses taught by full- and part-time faculty and graduate assistants and accreditation of degree granting programs); (4) "Institutional Cooperation and Collaboration"; (5) "Administrative Efficiency" (administrative and academic expenditures); (6) "Entrance Requirements" (e.g., qualifications of entering freshmen and admission standards); (7) "Graduates' Achievements" (e.g., performance funding graduation rate and student performance on professional examinations); (8) "User-Friendliness of the Institution" (e.g., enrollment by race and accessibility to the institution); (9) "Research Funding" (e.g., student involvement in research and financial support for teacher education); (10) "Campus-Based Assessment" (2002 summary reports on institutional Web sites); and (11) "Institutional Performance Rating Process" (institutional ratings for 1999-2000 performance year).
