This book presents instructional techniques and behaviors that result in the most significant achievement gains for preK-5 students, guiding teachers in assessing their strengths and building their skills within six key domains of literacy instruction directly linked to student success. The book is based on a macroanalysis of preK-5 reading instruction in 647 localities. It offers: characteristics of exemplary teachers at each grade level; self-assessment exercises to help teachers determine their strengths and weaknesses; sample lesson plans, learning activities, and resources for diverse learners; skills-building exercises for use with individuals or groups of students; and an explanation of the study, its findings, and how it was conducted.
