Building Capacity for Change: Research on the Scholarship of Teaching. Report.

The Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE) commissioned a study of the range and depth of pedagogic developments associated with the scholarship of teaching in higher education. This evidence-based review was designed to explore the relationship between pedagogic development (PedD) as supported through the Teaching Quality Enhancement Fund and pedagogic research (PedR). The study was planned to take into account the role of various stakeholders, including higher education institutions, efforts funded by the HEFCE, and government agencies. The study began with a systematic literature review and added interviews with researchers in higher education and 5 key players in the field of scholarship of teaching, 8 case studies at higher education institutions, and an e-mail survey completed by 43 administrators and staff in higher education institutions. Findings show that most of those interviewed could articulate a working definition of PedD, although there was some confusion over the meaning of scholarship of teaching and how that concept related to PedD and PedR. The scholarship of teaching and learning was seen as overlapping with PedD and PedR, and considerable activity in these fields was identified. Respondents were generally optimistic about the possibilities of advancing PedD. The case studies reveal significant levels of supportive activity within that sample of institutions.
