Guided Comprehension in the Primary Grades.
Intended as a response to recent developments in reading research and a demand by primary-grade teachers for a comprehension-based instructional framework, this book adapts the Guided Comprehension Model introduced in the author/educator's book "Guided Comprehension: A Teaching Model for Grades 3-8." According to the book, the Guided Comprehension Model is a teaching framework that develops reading comprehension by providing direct and guided strategy instruction: numerous opportunities for engagement, including comprehension centers and routines; and a variety of leveled texts and instructional settings. Part One of the book provides the theoretical framework for Guided Comprehension. It presents 10 research-based comprehension tenets as well as a detailed explanation of the Model and how it functions. In Part Two of the book, Guided Comprehension is situated in four themes: Favorite Author Eric Carle; The Neverending Adventure of Arthur the Aardvark; Animals, Animals!; and Dinosaur Discoveries. Each theme-based chapter in the book features multiple primary-level lessons as well as a variety of resources and examples of student work. Appendixes contain resources for teaching Guided Comprehension, including a literacy continuum for the primary grades; teaching ideas and booklists focused on phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension; comprehension-based teaching ideas and blackline masters; resources for organizing and managing comprehension centers and routines; assessment blackline masters; sources of leveled narrative and expository texts; and home-school connections.
