Asperger Syndrome--Practical Strategies for the Classroom: A Teacher's Guide.
Thomas, George; Barratt, Penny; Clewley, Heather; Joy, Helen; Potter, Mo; Whitaker, Philip
This guide to Asperger syndrome for teachers describes the underlying impairments of the condition, explains how these may lead to problems in school, and offers practical management suggestions. The first part gives an overview of Asperger syndrome and outlines the three core areas of impairment--social interaction, communication, and lack of flexibility of thought. The bulk of the guide is divided into six sections, three corresponding to the "core" impairments and a further three focused on broad areas of difficulty commonly experienced in school, namely sensory/motor difficulties, emotional difficulties, and work skills. Each of these topical sections includes: a title; a brief case "vignette" illustrating the difficulty; a section titled "Making Sense of It," which explains how the core impairments may contribute to that particular problem; and a section titled "Things to Try," which identifies strategies and practical tips suitable for use in the classroom. Also included are six suggestion for further reading and four addresses of relevant national organizations. (DB)
