A Writer's Journey: The Use of Writing Expedition Software to Support Student Revision.

Educators who teach students to write often teach students to create using the writing process. Students are encouraged to brainstorm topics, write a first draft, revise based on the response from a teacher or fellow student, proofread, and generate a final draft. Teachers maintain that students are often motivated by the use of technology to create drafts and make revisions. But with the use of Writing Expedition software, students are also using technology to review other students' papers in an online environment and leave comments without touching the original draft. Writing Expedition allows students to review several other students' papers with the click of a mouse. Students drop editing tabs about punctuation, capitalization, and syntax errors or type personalized comments in a text box in a draft other than the original. This paper describes how Writing Expedition allowed several sixth graders to read and comment on their classmates' writing in an online environment. A description of the results demonstrates how students left more comments and read more papers than would be possible in the classroom with the use of pen and paper because they had unlimited space to write comments and did not interfere with the original draft.
