Reflecting on NCTM's "Principles and Standards" in Elementary and Middle School Mathematics: Readings from NCTM's School-Based Journals.
Teppo, Anne R., Ed.
This collection of articles relating to elementary and middle school mathematics illustrate the goals outlined in the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) documents' six Principles and 10 Standards. These goals provide effective lenses for carefully examining and thinking deeply about the classroom episodes described in each article. The articles illustrate the variety of ways in which the vision of the "Principles and Standards" can be actualized within the constraints, realities, and challenges of today's classrooms. The articles are organized into three parts: (1) Principles; (2) Content Standards; and (3) Process Standards. Individual goals are listed for each principle and standard, and three or four articles are presented as exemplars of each set of goals. Activities are included at the end of each section to encourage further reflection upon the nature of these goals and their implications for classroom teaching and learning. (KHR)
