Ed-Excel Assessment of Secondary School Student Culture Tabulations by School District and Race/Ethnicity: Responses from Middle School, Junior High and High School Students in Districts of the Minority Student Achievement Network (MSAN), 2000-2001.
Ferguson, Ronald F.
This survey presents statistics on secondary school student culture by school district and race/ethnicity, using data from approximately forty thousand secondary school students in Minority Student Achievement Network districts. Information is presented in six areas: (1) "Family Background Resources and Living Arrangements (racial/ethnic differences in family background resources and similarity of these patterns across districts); (2) "Motivation When Working Hard" (racial/ethnic differences in the relative importance of demand versus encouragement from teachers and similarity across districts); (3) "Comprehension/Proficiency" (racial/ethnic differences in understanding and similarity of patterns across districts); (4) "Feelings about Teachers and School" (relatively minor racial/ethnic differences and no consistent pattern in which racial/ethnic group seems most interested or engaged); (5) "Homework Hours and Completion Rates" (Blacks, Whites, and Latinos report essentially the same average amounts of time spent on homework (Asians study more), but Whites and Asians exceed Blacks and Latinos in the proportions who report finishing their homework); and (6) "Social Conditions and Peer Relations" (whether one racial/ethnic group has a less academically supportive peer culture than others depends upon which measure of peer conditions are examined).
