This book is directed toward students in organizational-theory and problem-analysis classes and their professors, as well as school administrators seeking to examine their problems and policies from new perspectives. It explains and illustrates methodology for describing, documenting, and analyzing organizational problems. Part I, "Methodology," previews the major elements of the methodology; discusses problem indicators, standards of comparisons, and the importance of identifying and profiling stakeholders and decision-makers; and provides a perspective on causal analysis and ways to develop an action strategy based on causal analysis. Part II, "Theory Sketches," describes four selected organizational theories: bureaucratic theory, social-systems theory, political-systems theory, and leadership theory. Part III, "Case Examples," offers two pairs of examples prepared by students in organizational-analysis classes. The first pair illustrates problem-analyzing methodology using theoretical frameworks found in the social-science literature. The second pair illustrates an approach critiquing organizational decision-making through the lens of the four paradigms of Burrell and Morgan's meta-framework. The book contains a number of detailed figures and tables, illustrative outlines, lists of questions for analyzing problems, an author index, a subject index, an extended list of suggestion readings, 38 footnotes, and 235 references.
