Literacy Leadership for Grades 5-12.
Taylor, Rosemarye; Collins, Valerie Doyle
Literacy is the foundation for success in all secondary school courses. Many middle and high school administrators are looking for an effective way to help all their students become better readers, writers, communicators, and learners of standards-based content curriculum. This book shows administrators how to combine sound leadership processes with literacy strategies targeted at adolescents. Along with clear steps and practical guidelines, the book offers examples, resources, and templates to help secondary school administrators analyze their school's current literacy climate and "kickstart" the development of a new, "fail-safe" system. It explains how to: find hidden sources of information on which students are learning literacy behaviors and which are not; identify necessary adjustments to current curriculum, learning tools, and instructional approaches; set appropriate schoolwide expectations for literacy learning; incorporate literacy-focused professional development; and create a plan for building future capacity and realizing continuous improvement. Chapters in the book are: (1) Committing to Literacy Leadership; (2) Using Data to Design a System of Literacy; (3) Aligning Curriculum, Instruction, Learning Tools, and Assessment; (4) Creating Classrooms for Literacy Learning; (5) Designing Professional Development to Ensure Success; and (6) Building Capacity for Continuous Improvement. (Contains 66 references.) (NKA)
