Mathematics in Action: Two New Zealand Case Studies.
Ryan, David M.
Mathematics is playing an increasingly important role in business and industry. In this paper we present two case studies to illustrate the power and impact of mathematics in two important practical applications in New Zealand. The first case study describes the development of a mathematical optimization model to maximize the value of aluminum produced at New Zealand Aluminum Smelters Ltd. The second case study describes the development and implementation of state of the art optimization models and solution methods to solve all aspects of the crew scheduling problems for Air New Zealand Ltd.
