This guide provides parents of children with special needs information on opportunities to develop and apply leadership skills in Colorado. Introductory material considers the nature of parent leadership, the various roles of parent leaders, and ways to learn leadership skills. The next section describes specific parent leadership opportunities at the following agencies: Colorado Department of Education; Health Care Program for Children with Special Needs; Colorado Developmental Disabilities Planning Council; Childrens Health and Rehabilitation Services; Colorado Community Mental Health System; Colorado Developmental Disabilities System; and JFK Partners, University of Colorado Health Sciences Center. Specific Colorado parent leadership development programs described include the Advocacy Project, the Coaching Project, Family Advocacy Curriculum, Mobilizing Families, Parent Encouraging Parents, and Policymakers. The final section describes other Colorado resources related to parent leadership development including Arc of Colorado, the Colorado Family Resource Network, Colorado Family Voices, and the Denver Community Leadership Forum. Remaining sections provide contact information for disability related interest groups, offer some strategies for participating, list publications, and describe the Early Childhood Connections statewide system.
