Cesar Chavez--Grade Five Model Curriculum and Resources.
California State Dept. of Education, Sacramento.
In this California state curriculum model for grade 5, "United States History and Geography: A New Nation," students study the historical developments leading to the discovery and colonization of North America by European countries and the ensuing interactions between Native Americans, Europeans, and enslaved Americans. The curriculum addresses California state standards; sets a context; poses focus questions; cites expected learning outcomes; discusses assessment; lists key concepts; suggests an essential vocabulary, primary sources, and visuals; and provides a detailed step-by-step procedure for implementing each of the five lessons. Lessons are: (1) "Independence: The Final Decision"; (2) "The Struggle for Freedom"; (3) "The United States Grows Larger"; (4) "Cesar E. Chavez Makes It to California"; and (5) "Exercising One's Rights as a Citizen." A biography and photographs of Cesar Chavez are included. (BT)
