Cesar Chavez--Grade Four Model Curriculum and Resources.
California State Dept. of Education, Sacramento.
In this California state curriculum model for grade 4, "California: A Changing State," students study the history and development of California from earliest times to the present. The curriculum emphasizes the role of immigration, the development of California's economy, agriculture and infrastructure, its geography and the contributions of men and women of diverse backgrounds. Special attention is given to the role of labor in industry and agriculture, including how Cesar E. Chavez, through nonviolent tactics, educated the general public about the working conditions in agriculture and led the movement to improve the lives of farm workers. The curriculum model offers background information; addresses history/social science state standards; sets a context; poses a focus question; cites expected learning outcomes; discusses assessment; lists key concepts; suggests essential vocabulary, primary sources, and visuals; and provides a detailed step-by-step procedure for implementing each of the six lessons. Lessons are: (1) "How the Great Depression Affected California and Cesar E. Chavez"; (2) "Immigration: When Did Your Family Arrive?"; (3) "Cesar E. Chavez Used Nonviolence to Educate the Public"; (4) "The Value of Education for California and Cesar E. Chavez"; (5) "Cesar Chavez, Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and Civil Rights"; and (6) "Cesar E. Chavez Celebrated Cultural Diversity." Informative materials about farm worker protests, a biography of Cesar Chavez, and many photographs are included. (BT)
