Math Matters: Understanding the Math You Teach. Grades K-6.
Chapin, Suzanne, H.; Johnson, Art
This book is designed to help teachers in the elementary grades deepen their understanding of the mathematics they have to teach. It is based on the belief that teachers cannot teach what they do not understand well, and it addresses several fundamental questions: (1) What math concepts and skills are important in the elementary grades?; (2) Why are these topics included in the elementary math curriculum?; (3) What does a teacher need to understand in order to teach these ideas well?; and (4) What can we learn from research done by mathematics educators about teaching and learning these ideas? There are 13 chapters, each focusing on an important math topic that is studied in the elementary grades. Topics include number sense, computation, addition and subtraction, multiplication and division, fractions, decimals, percents, algebra, plane geometry, spatial sense, measurement, statistics, and probability. Each chapter begins with a brief introduction followed by sections that address different aspects of the topic. (KHR)
