Miscues, Not Mistakes: Reading Assessment in the Classroom.
Davenport, M. Ruth
This practical guide aims to present a miscue analysis workshop in a book, to offer a teacher-friendly account of the "whys and hows" of the topic. The guide demonstrates that the teacher can do miscue analysis every day with every student reading any book through the use of an "Over the Shoulder Procedure." Teachers will not only be able to interpret what they hear when they listen carefully to readers, they will realize that changes in the text are miscues, not mistakes, that tell them much about the reader's use of language and processing of written text. The guide's author lays the foundation for understanding her methods with a thorough description of the reading process from a transactive sociopsycholinguistic perspective--she then offers practical applications of these methods using reproducibles, examples, and explanatory artwork. The guide also suggests using the link to the publisher's website to give the teacher a chance to hear an 8-year-old reading while looking at a transcript and marking the student's miscues on a typescript included in the guide and following the author as she evaluates his reading. The 13 appendixes provide various forms, guides, reading texts. Contains a 109-item bibliography. Cites 6 children's books. (NKA)
