Electing the U.S. President and Vice President is a basic right and responsibility of every citizen of voting age. Even though it occurs every 4 years, the complexities of electing the president is not a concept that every person understands. This resource book aims to fill the gap in understanding by providing students with a learning-by-doing experience. In the book's week-long simulation, students become the candidates, the conventioneers, the voters, and the Electoral College members. Going step-by-step through the process, from candidates declaring their intention to run for office to the final Electoral College vote, students understand how the voters of the United States choose their leaders and how the popular vote that is cast at the ballot boxes relates to the final selection of the President and Vice President. Designed for use in grades 4-8, the book provides teachers with tools they need for staging a successful simulation background information for their students, day-by-day procedures, samples, issues for platforms and debates, and necessary forms for voting and record keeping. The format allows teachers to use the activity with as few as 15 students or with as many as 450 students. It involves important concepts for social studies education and also provides opportunities for researching, persuasive writing, public speaking, team work, and mathematics applications. (BT)
