Performance-Based Assessment for Middle and High School Physical Education.
Lund, Jacalyn Lea; Kirk, Mary Fortman
This book presents ideas to help middle and high school physical education (PE) teachers develop performance based assessments. The book: identifies problems in traditional PE and explains how using performance based assessment can improve student learning; notes that it is unnecessary to totally rewrite the PE program, offering guidelines for slowly working performance based assessments into the existing curriculum; describes different types of assessment and how to write rubrics for each; demonstrates how rubrics simplify the task of grading students and enable positive outcomes for both teachers and students; and gives resource hints for advanced teachers developing assessments on different topics. The book also includes: 10 performance-based assessments and their corresponding rubrics; complete performance based assessment unit plans for team and individual sport units for modification; information on grading; and a NASPE chart that describes how standards are met. Eleven chapters are: (1) "The Need for Change"; (2) "What is Continuous Performance-Based Assessment?" (3) "Rubrics"; (4) "Developing Performance-Based Assessments"; (5) "Open Response Questions"; (6) "Portfolios"; (7) "Developing Culminating and Progressive Assessments"; (8) "Planning for Continuous Performance-Based Assessment"; (9) "Continuous Performance-Based Assessment in Team Sports"; (10) "Effective Grading in Physical Education"; and (11) "Acquiring Assessment Savvy."
