Applying NCTE/IRA Standards in Classroom Journalism Projects: Activities and Scenarios.
Bowen, Candace Perkins; Tantillo, Susan Hathaway
Whether an educator teaches journalism, English, or language arts, this guide will help him/her help middle school and high school students get the most from journalism study and practice informed by English language arts standards. The guide is organized into 12 chapters, each focusing on how the kinds of student journalism work advocated by the Journalism Education Association can fulfill one of the 12 standards identified in the "Standards for the English Language Arts" copublished by the National Council of Teachers of English and the International Reading Association. Grounded in the decades of classroom experience shared by its co-authors and nine contributors, the guide offers vignettes from real classrooms as well as teacher-tested class plans, activities, and exercises suitable for use in full journalism courses or as stand-alone segments in English and language arts classrooms. The guide's hands-on approaches make clear the benefits of explicitly linking student journalism work with English language arts standards to help student develop critical skills by engaging with real-world situations--for example, gathering and synthesizing information from a wide variety of sources and presenting ideas to diverse audiences for diverse purposes. Its aim is to help students become better thinkers, better communicators, and, as a result, better citizens. (NKA)
