California State Standard 5.5 is delineated as: Students explain the causes of the Revolutionary War. The Revolutionary War is a great central drama in U.S. history and in the evolution of nationalism and democracy throughout the world. Students should perceive the worldwide impact of the colonies' triumph over British imperial power and its effect still at work in modern nationalist and democratic revolutions. They should understand how political, religious, and economic ideas and interests brought about the Revolutionary War. This lesson begins with the escalation of conflict between the colonies and Britain; each side seeing its own expectations as justified and reasonable. Throughout the unit, teachers should introduce biographies and stories of important persons. Independent and small-group readings, readings aloud, telling stories, staging short skits, and role playing are only a few means of engaging students in the material. The lesson discusses significance of topic ("Beginning the Topic"; "Developing the Topic"; "Culminating the Topic"); assessment; extended and correlated activities; resources for sample topic; visual and performing art resources; Web sites; Appendix V-1--"What Caused the Revolutionary War?"; Appendix V-2--"Meaning of Revolution"; Appendix 5-3--"Steps to Revolution"; Appendix V-4--"Flag"; Appendix V-5--"Notable Figures of the Revolutionary Era"; Appendix V-6--"Unsung Heroes of the Revolution"; and Appendix V-7--"Six-Point Decision Making Chart."
