This collection of essays gives the reader intimate views of the author's perspectives on topics ranging from social justice and education to service learning. The book is divided into four parts. Part 1 focuses on the general nature of the author's social and cultural critique of education. Relationships between educational policies and practices, and broader social and cultural concerns, are examined. Part 2 deals with a number of curricular approaches designed as alternatives to the conventional and stultifying programs that currently pass for education in American schools. Critiques of moral education, character education, service learning, and holistic education are offered. Part 3 is in the nature of a still deeper exploration into the possibilities of using religious and spiritual discourse in educational inquiry. The papers in this part represent the author's current focus of interest as well as the locus of his personal spiritual struggle. Part 4 consists of only one selection--an essay that is primarily autobiographical in nature--that was written for a book of collected essays on how various academics have or have not integrated their Jewish origins with their scholarly work. This book concludes with an afterword by Jeffrey Kane. (RT)
