The National Writing Project (NWP) at Work monograph series describes NWP work, often shared informally or in workshops through the NWP network, and offers detailed chronological accounts for sites interested in adopting and adapting the models. In 1991, an educational innovation, the National Writing Project in Vermont (NWP-VT) began its first year. This monograph--"The Fledgling Years"--documents the first four years of the NWP site. The monograph's first article, "Establishing NWP in Vermont: Linking the State, the University, Theorists, and Vermont's Schools" (Patricia McGonegal), covers the historical background, explains the gap in the state's professional development filled by NWP-VT, and discusses the first summer institute, funding, and collaborations. Its second article, "Inservice at Two Vermont Schools: A Success and a Learning Experience" (Anne Watson), compares two early professional development series (one was a success, the other was not), reflects on what was learned from both series, and offers a mini-handbook for planners and coordinators of professional development series. Appendixes contain a list of National Writing Project basic assumptions; a sample invoice; a sample brochure; sample teacher resource survey questions; an evaluation form for individual sessions; a sample series agenda; a sample session agenda; a sample evaluation form for series; and a sample letter to a school administrator.
