Academic Staff: Trends and Projections. Issues Paper.
Higher Education Funding Council for England, Bristol.
This study investigated how many academic staff members will have to be recruited over the next 10 years to fill the needs of higher education institutions funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England (HEFCE). Estimates were made of overall leaving rates and whether there would be a significant increase in rates because of staff retiring. Projections were made based on recent trends from 1995 to 2000 using a time series from 1995 and projection to 2010. Data are from the Higher Education Statistics Agency staff records. Findings show that, overall, current recruitment rates are sufficient to maintain current staff numbers. The profile of current staff does not suggest that higher overall recruitment rates are needed to maintain current numbers. However, this varies by subject. In addition, it is noted that if staff numbers are to increase, there will need to be a marked increase in recruitment. Five annexes with supplementary information are available on the HEFCE Web site. (Contains 20 figures and 6 tables.) (SLD)
