This book is intended for professionals who are responsible for designing and implementing educational programs for children with attention deficit disorders and attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADD/ADHD). Chapters address: (1) myths and realities about ADD/ADHD; (2) definitions, disorders associated with ADD/ADHD, and federal educational definitions; (3) characteristics, developmental profiles of children with ADD/ADHD from infancy through adulthood, and an ADD/ADHD screening checklist; (4) clinical and educational diagnosis, and eligibility of students with ADD/ADHD for services under federal legislation; (5) neurology of learning and learning correlates in ADD/ADHD; (6) medical intervention, mediation options, monitoring mediation in the classroom, medication and self-esteem, and controversial treatments for ADD/ADHD; (7) behavioral interventions, specific behaviors and suggestions, social behaviors, attitude for approaching behavior management, and applying behavior modification strategies with ADD/ADHD; (8) educational intervention, principles of program design, a brain-based report card on teaching strategies, educational accommodations and an accommodation plan for students with ADD/ADHD; (9) home intervention; and (10) building communication between home and school and using a team approach for treating ADD/ADHD.
