Beyond Dead Reckoning: Research Priorities for Redirecting American Higher Education.
Wegner, Gregory R., Ed.
This essay identifies a set of research priorities that will enable those most responsible for U.S. higher education to shape the enterprise in more purposeful ways. The present discrepancy between ideals and realities makes it evident that higher education is less than it should be. The essay identifies three broad research priorities: (1) improving educational quality and institutional performance; (2) balancing market forces with higher education's public purposes; and (3) drawing new maps for a changing enterprise. Under each heading, the essay describes the context that gives rise to each of the research priorities, articulates key lines of inquiry, and provides examples that address the distinct perspectives of institutional leaders and policymakers. Relative weights have not been assigned to the proposed lines of inquiry, but the primary focus is on undergraduate education because both the number and diversity of students and the range of educational quality students experience are greatest in this area.
