Using Higher-Order Thinking To Improve Reading Comprehension. Rx [Grades 6-Adult]. Reading Detective[TM].
Block, Cheryl; Broz, Christine; Hockett, Margaret; White, David
Part of a series, the purpose of this low-readability/high interest book is to provide instruction and practice in using higher order thinking to develop students' reading comprehension skills. The comprehension skills addressed in the book meet state standards for secondary students grades six and up, and the reading level is fourth and fifth grades. The goal of this series of books is to teach students how to analyze what they read: students answer questions based on a passage and then provide supporting evidence from the text for their answers. The book contains three types of reading passages: nonfiction articles on a variety of topics in the different content areas; fictional stories in a variety of writing styles; and literature excerpts from award-winning and well-known authors. After an introduction, the units are: Main Idea and Supporting Details; Conclusions and Inferences; Story Elements; Literary Devices; Theme; Vocabulary; Figurative Language; Cause and Effect; Prediction; Fact and Opinion; and Mixed Skills. Contains an answer key; a 25-item glossary; and 7 literature citations. (PM)
