The Use of the TI-92 Calculator in Developmental Algebra for College Students.

This study explores a program designed to revolutionize developmental mathematics at the college level using the new handheld computer algebra systems and new information about the ways in which students learn mathematics. Students in one class of developmental algebra worked with the new approach to learn algebra by building on their intuitive understanding of mathematical principles, using algebraic manipulatives to acquire an understanding of the underlying concepts, developing traditional algebraic techniques out of this understanding, and employing the TI-92 calculator to facilitate computations. Results indicate improvement in success rates in subsequent mathematics courses. (Contains 24 references.) (KHR)
