Designing Partnerships between Science Centers and After-School Programs: Lessons from "Design It! Engineering in After School Programs."
Coltin, Lillian; Gannett, Ellen
This document introduces science center educators to a new partnership model based on lessons learned during a 3-year national pilot project to support collaboration between six urban science centers and over 30 community-based after-school programs. The collaboration tested and refined an innovative curriculum challenging children to build working models of small functional machines and toys and to practice crucial elements of the design process: experimentation, problem solving, and teamwork. The document is presented in three sections. Section 1 focuses on the potential benefits of science center and after-school program collaboration, provides a rationale for collaboration, and describes the "Design It! Engineering in After School Programs" pilot project. Section 2 provides guidance in launching a collaborative project and includes information on locating funding sources and recruiting collaborative partners. Section 3 addresses five challenges of designing partnerships, describing specific tasks and providing resources for each challenge: (1) spreading the idea to potential partners; (2) assembling the team of partners; (3) building a relationship with the partners; (4) providing guidance through training; and (5) driving the project forward with the partners. The document's three appendices provide profiles of the Design It! project partners, contain tools used in developing and implementing the curriculum, and include a Web site directory. (KB)
