Best Practices from America's Middle Schools.
Watson, Charles R.
Designed for the middle-school educator, this guide presents successful instructional and operational programs. All programs originated at the school level and were adapted or implemented by principals, teachers, or parents close to the problems the programs address. The programs come from four major sources: national and regional conferences, the Internet, the ERIC database, and recommendations from practitioners. To fit the criteria for inclusion in this guide, programs had to have direct influences on practicing teachers and principals, had to have specific goals related to students, and had to have results. For each program, there are details on its goals, how it works, how it is funded, how much it costs, things to consider, current progress and results, and contact information. The guide is organized into five broad chapters: (1) "Transitions and Teams"; (2) "Instruction, Curriculum, and Assessment"; (3) "At-Risk Students, Behavior, and Motivation"; (4) "Parents, Partners, and the School Community"; and (5) "Middle School Teachers: Novices, Experts, and Development." A matrix of programs and middle-level issues is included for an easy search. (WFA)
