When Johnny Went Marching Off. 8th Grade Activity. Schools of California Online Resources for Education (SCORE): Connecting California's Classrooms to the World.
This eighth grade lesson plan asks students to work in groups of four. They must: (1) decide whether to join the Union Army or the Confederate Army; (2) decide under which General they will serve and in which battles they will fight; and (3) once this decision has been made, assign the following roles for team or group members: photographer, reporter, biographer, and soldier. The lesson is meant to provide an opportunity for a class to cover a broad spectrum of the U.S. Civil War as possible in the shortest amount of time possible. For the students, the lesson plan gives background information about common practices during the Civil War; assigns and explains the task; and discusses self evaluation. For the teacher, the lesson plan gives grade/unit; addresses California academic standards for eighth grade; and suggests lesson extensions. Includes a group evaluation sheet. (BT)
