Investigating the Graded Relationships among Score Categories in Passage-Based Testlets: Application of the Nominal Response Model.
Lee, Yong-Won
The main purpose of this study was to examine the structure of score categories in passage-based testlets in an English as a Foreign Language (EFL) reading comprehension test using the nominal response model (NRM). The computer program MULTILOG (D. Thissen, 1991) was used to fit the full and 7 constrained versions of NRM to testlet scores of 1,857 Korean high school students from an EFL reading comprehension test made of 10 passage-based testlets. The results of the analysis have revealed that it would be reasonable to constrain the category-to-category changes in discrimination and distribution parameters to be linear and quadratic plus linear for the 10 testlets, respectively. Results also show that it would be appropriate to assume that the estimated threshold difficulty parameters increase linearly from the lower to higher steps. It is concluded that the score categories within each passage-based testlet could be practically regarded as graded responses. (Contains 3 figures, 3 tables, and 30 references.) (Author/SLD)
