Reworking the Workshop: Math and Science Reform in the Primary Grades.
This book offers a plan to improve how students construct math and science understanding. Underpinning this book are three important ideas based on research and classroom experience: (1) some ways of teaching help students understand math and science better; (2) good math and science teaching resembles good literacy teaching; and (3) math and science workshops combine reform teaching techniques with a familiar, successful lesson format. The book offers practical ideas for developing students' natural faculties in math and science by applying advances in research to proven workshop techniques. Using these ideas, students engage in hands-on learning, choice, reflection, inquiry, and problem-solving as they deepen their understanding of math and science. Teachers are taken through every step of reforming their classroom from planning curriculum, teaching mini-lessons, managing hands-on activities, and encouraging reflection to assessing student learning. Also included is advice on how to line up support for reform efforts by communicating with administrators and parents. (MM)
