This handbook presents statistics about the public and private schools of Maryland. In 2000-2001, there were 852,920 public school students in Maryland and 187,100 nonpublic school students, representing a 5.9% increase in the public school enrollment over 5 years and a 12.3% increase in the nonpublic school enrollment over 5 years. There were 1,380 public schools in the state and 1,157 nonpublic schools. Of the states 100,531 public school staff, 68,485 were in instructional positions. The majority of the states public school students were White (53.4%) and 37.1% were African American and 4.8% were Hispanic American. Most teachers were white (76.7%). Statewide, the average dropout rate was 3.90%, although in Baltimore City, the dropout rate was 10.44%. Most of the states 47,740 high school graduates planned to go to college. Information is also provided about achievement test results for the Scholastic Aptitude Test and the Maryland School Performance Assessment, as well as information about teacher salaries, financial resources, special programs, correctional education, and vocational and adult education.
