Violence Goes to School.
Nicoletti, John; Spencer-Thomas, Sally
This book-for school administrators, school resource officers, teachers, and interested parents-is a guide for developing prevention and response plans to handle threats and violence in schools. With a focus on practical measures, it provides step-by-step advice on early identification of problems, intervention and prevention techniques, and containment procedures to reduce the risk of school violence. Thirteen chapters are grouped into four parts. Part I: Schoolplace Violence Overview presents a recent history of school violence, describes the dynamics of school violence, and identifies predictors to violence. Part II: Interrupting Schoolplace Violence reviews several successful prevention plans that resulted in "near misses," and offers recommendations on developing policies and procedures, which include training of staff and dealing with the media. Part III: Responding to Schoolplace Violence furnishes practical advice on emergency preparedness, notification procedures, ways to neutralize schoolplace violence, and surviving a violent incident. Part IV: Schoolplace Violence Aftermath presents strategies to cope with the aftereffects of a violent incident. An appendix contains four intervention plans, in the form of flowcharts, and two checklists, one for interrupting and one for responding to school violence. The guide also contains a glossary, an index, additional resources, and over 100 references. (WFA)
