Strategic Leadership in Academic Affairs: Clarifying the Board's Responsibilities.
Morrill, Richard L.
Association of Governing Boards of Universities and Colleges
This book is designed to reduce the ambiguities that accompany a governing board's policy responsibilities for academic affairs. Boards have legitimate concerns about academic program quality and faculty work, and trustees expect to participate in the difficult decisions regarding these matters. Chapter 1, The Culture of Academic Decision Making, explains the basic tension between the values that characterize academic professionals and those that define organizations. Chapter 2, Teaching and Learning in an Era of Transformation, discusses broad trends in teaching and learning, and chapter 3, The Strategic Structure and Evaluation of Academic Programs, focuses on program content and structure. Chapter 4, "The Strategic Analysis of the Academic Budget, focuses on the relationship between strategic planning and budgeting. Chapter 5, The Dynamics of Trustee Responsibility, looks at trustees' responsibilities in the context of collaborative strategic decision making. Chapter 6, Faculty Responsibilities and Tenure and Appointment Policies, explores the world of the faculty member and examines the multiple expectations academics face. Chapter 7 discusses the role of the academic affairs committee. The conclusion contains an analysis and illustration of trustee effectiveness in real-life academic decision making. An appendix contains the results of a survey of chief academic officers and board members about the board's responsibility for academic affairs. (Contains 83 references.) (SLD)
