UNICEF Annual Report, 2002.
United Nations Children's Fund, New York, NY.
The United Nations Children's Fund, UNICEF, is mandated by the U.N. General Assembly to advocate for the protection of children's rights, to help meet children's basic needs, and to expand their opportunities to reach their full potential. This report details the accomplishments and activities of UNICEF for the year 2001. Following statements from the United Nations Secretary-General and the UNICEF Executive Director, the report presents the achievements of UNICEF and its partners in 2001 tied to specific targets in the areas of health care, nutrition, education, safe water, and adequate sanitation. The report continues with a description of activities to prepare for the United Nations General Assembly Special Session on Children in May 2002, most notably conducting interviews with over 40,000 children in 72 countries, the results of which will provide guidance in future UNICEF programs and inform global policies and goals. Other activities described include garnering support for the "Say Yes for Children" campaign and assessing the conditions of children in 150 countries. The work of national committees and businesses in contributing to the achievements of UNICEF is also described. The report includes a table delineating UNICEF's sources of income by country, area, or territory and delineates programs funded from regular UNICEF resources. Global partnerships and collaborations are listed for each program or initiative. The report concludes with a list of international celebrity spokespersons and the mission statement. (KB)
