Two Reactions to "The Mathematical Education of Teachers."
Cohen, Amy; Krantz, Steven G.
Notices of the AMS, v48 n9 p985-991 Oct 2001
This paper presents two reactions to the Conference Board of the Mathematical Sciences' (CBMS') "The Mathematical Education of Teachers" (August 2001). The reactions were written by professors of mathematics at American universities. It is concluded that the report benefits from an underlying assumption that an alliance of concept and process is needed rather than a victory of one over the other and that the stress on the importance of schools of education is a positive aspect. The report is criticized for not providing enough information on how to imbue preservice teachers with the ideas contained therein. (MM)
