This checklist for beginning teachers is based on information gathered from surveys of school administrators which asked them to discuss common difficulties experienced by beginning teachers. Four sections focus on: "Becoming a Professional" (applying for a job, the cover letter, the resume, the interview, frequently asked interview questions, understanding the role of other school staff, understanding one's role as teacher, and improving professional judgement); "Teaching With Confidence" (managing student conduct, effective communication practices, delivery of instruction, and presenting the lesson); "Beyond the Classroom" (non-instructional responsibilities, organizing one's life, and law suits and being sued); and "Strategies for Success" (ten practical strategies for long-term success in teaching and resources from the NEA Professional Library).
