This publication provides a detailed look at public education in Texas for the 2000-2001 school year. It provides readers with the basic information needed to examine differences in size, wealth, ethnic composition, and academic achievement and to assess the relative strengths and weaknesses of public school districts in Texas. This Snapshot provides information in a consistent format from year to year. This years Snapshot, the 14th, begins with Statistical Highlights, an overview that outlines the organization of public education in Texas, describes characteristics of students and teachers, and discusses the finances of education in Texas. The body of the report, Detailed Statistics, contains 87 data items for each of the 1,040 school districts in the state and the 159 charter schools. The first part of Detailed Statistics contains summary tables that show districts and charters by size, community type, tax rates, property wealth per pupil, and by Education Service Center region. The next part of Detailed Statistics contains values for each of the 87 indicators for each district and charter. Snapshot 2001 concludes with five appendixes that contain definitions for data items, a bibliography, a list of data sources, endnotes, and a list of school districts and charter schools.
