Henn-Reinke, Kathryn; Lawrence, Lillian; Plicka, Greta; Skarich, Nancy; Yemma, Mary; Cooper, Albert P., Sr.
Developed by educators in the Milwaukee, Wisconsin, public schools, this book shows ways to engage students in high quality work, reveal information about students that cannot be seen through standardized tests, and help students become responsible for their own academic growth. The Assessment Portfolios described are used in 21 Milwaukee schools that are part of the P-5 (preschool to grade 5) program focusing on raising student achievement. The chapters of part 1, The Assessment Portfolio as a Vehicle for Change, are: (1) Rationale for the Design and Implementation of an Assessment Portfolio; (2) How To Implement an Assessment Portfolio at the District/School Level; (3) Managing the Portfolio in the Classroom: Questions and Answers; (4) Teaching Students What They Need To Know To Use the Assessment Portfolio Effectively; and (5) Lessons Learned. Part 2, Assessment Portfolio Materials, contains: (6) Reading: Story Elements and Personal Response to Literature; (7) Writing; (8) Mathematics; (9) The Learning Project; and (10) Individual Conferencing and Goal Setting. The five appendixes contain camera ready copies of various rubrics and assessments. (SLD)
