New Directions for Community Colleges, n118 Sum 2002
This document reports on the current status of community college faculty. Several articles draw on a survey of community college faculty administered by the Center for the Study of Community Colleges (CSCC) in 2000. CSCC staff invited 240 randomly chosen college presidents to appoint a local facilitator to administer the survey on campus. A total of 156 of 240 college presidents participated in the study. Of the 2,292 surveys distributed, 1,531 were returned. Full-time faculty made up 69.5% of the total sample but only 38% of the national community college faculty total. The following 12 articles are included: (1) "Disciplinary Variations in the Work of Full-Time Faculty Members"; (2) "University Reference Group Identification among Community College Faculty"; (3) "Using the Lenses of Critically Reflective Teaching in the Community College Classroom"; (4) "Instructional Practices of Part-Time and Full-Time Faculty"; (5) "Faculty Attitudes about Students"; (6) "Part-Time Faculty: Competent and Committed"; (7) "Exploring the Climate for Women as Community College Faculty"; (8) "Campus Life for Faculty of Color: Still Strangers After All These Years?"; (9) "The Current State of Faculty Development in Two-Year Colleges"; (10) "Building Community: The Second Century, the Same Challenge"; (11) "Toward a Professionalized Community College Professoriate"; and (12) "Sources and Information."
