Illinois Community College System Programs and Services for Underrepresented Groups--Fiscal Year, 2001. Focus Area: Campus Climate.

The Promise for Illinois is the statewide strategic plan for the Illinois Community College System (ICCS). It promotes the provision of programs, services, and events that encourage diversity and foster knowledge of other cultures. Efforts and strategies to increase participation and achievement among minorities, women, and individuals with disabilities are reported upon annually through the Underrepresented Groups Report, which is required by legislation. The focus topic in this report is campus climate. Selected college responses and community college programs and services are highlighted. Statistics include: (1) 36% of students enrolled in the ICCS were non-Caucasian during fiscal year 2001; (2) of those, 36% enrolled in adult education coursework were African American, 25% were Hispanic, and 3% were Asian; (3) 69% of those enrolled in English-as-a-Second-Language (ESL) classes were Hispanic, while 8% were Asian; (4) 13% of those enrolled in baccalaureate transfer programs were African American, 7% were Hispanic, and 5% were Asian; and (5) 8% of full time faculty were African American, 2% were Hispanic, and 6% of full time faculty were Asian. The report recommends that colleges create and strengthen programs, initiatives, and services that encourage a diverse and equitable campus culture.
