Black Children: Social, Educational, and Parental Environments. Second Edition.
McAdoo, Harriette Pipes, Ed.
This book collects empirical research unique to the experiences and situations of black children and their parents, explaining that to be fully functional, they must develop the skills to succeed simultaneously in black and non-black cultures. The book explores the meaning of this duality in four distinct environments: socioeconomic, parental, internal, and educational. Twelve chapters are: (1) "The Dynamics of African American Fathers' Family Roles" (Harriette Pipes McAdoo and John L. McAdoo); (2) "Diverse Children of Color: Research and Policy Implications" (Harriette Pipes McAdoo); (3) "African American Grandmothers' and Grandfathers' Influence in the Value of Socialization of Grandchildren" (Linda McWright); (4) "The Village Talks: Racial Socialization of Our Children" (Harriette Pipes McAdoo); (5) "Racial Socialization of Young Black Children" (Marie Ferguson Peters); (6) "Racial Identity Development in African American Children: Cognitive and Experiential Antecedents" (Carolyn Bennett Murray and Jelani Mandara); (7) "Racial Socialization Processes in Single-Mother Families: Linking Maternal Racial Identity, Parenting, and Racial Socialization in Rural, Single-Mother Families with Child Self-Worth and Self-Regulation" (Velma McBride Murry and Gene H. Brody); (8) "A Psychological and Educational Perspective on Black Parenting" (Anderson J. Franklin, Nancy Boyd-Franklin, and Charlene V. Draper); (9) "Family and Child Influences on Educational Attainment: A Secondary Analysis of the High/Scope Perry Preschool Data" (Tom Luster and Harriette Pipes McAdoo); (10) "Sankofa Shule Spells Success for African American Children" (Shariba W. Rivers and Freya A. Rivers); (11) "Conflict Resolution Styles among African American Children and Youth" (Algea O. Harrison-Hale); and (12) "Violent Crime, Race, and Black Children: Parenting and the Social Contract" (Bill E. Lawson and Renee Sanders-Lawson). (Papers contain references.) (SM)
