Developing Chemistry and Mathematics Teacher Leaders in Israel.

The implementation of new standards in science and mathematics education necessitates an intensive and comprehensive professional development of science and mathematics teachers. Israel, which currently is in the process of reforming school science and mathematics, constructed a continuous lifelong framework for such professional development. This framework includes the development of science and mathematics teacher leaders. This chapter presents a detailed description of two examples of such leadership preparation in chemistry and mathematics teaching conducted at the Department of Science Teaching in the Weizmann Institute of Science. There are similarities in the structure of the two courses. However, the content and activities were designed to attain the specific nature and goals of each of these areas in general, and the aims and objectives of the curriculum developers in particular.
