Multiculturalism and the Liberal Arts College: Faculty Perceptions of Pedagogy.
Aleman, Ana M. Martinez; Salkever, Katya
This is a qualitative study of faculty perceptions of the relationship between pedagogy, liberal education, and multiculturalism. The incompatibility of liberal education and multiculturalism ground this study along with the assertion that teaching and learning are central to the liberal education mission. Nineteen faculty members participated in interviews. The findings suggest that the lack of coherence between institutional mission and multiculturalism, the absence of agreement of faculty and administration on the role of multiculturalism in liberal education, and a variety of epistemological positions characterize faculty views of teaching and learning at a liberal arts college struggling to attain pluralistic community. The interview protocol is attached. (Contains 17 references.) (SLD)
